Details & Diagrams

Take a deep dive into the world of the Vickers Vimy. Contrast the planes of yesterday and today, research about materials and structural design of the Vimy then complete a labelled diagram of the aircraft.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

Research into the history, materials and design of the Vickers Vimy aircraft.

Draw and label the craft, completing the scaled diagram.

Compare and contrast aircrafts of the past with those of today.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

Demonstrate a deep understanding of the Vickers Vimy aircraft.

Discuss how aeroplanes have developed and changed since the Vickers Vimy.

GETTING STARTED

Have your students ever heard of Australia’s Great Air Race? Do they know the names Ross and Keith Smith? If so, what do they know about them? What is their understanding of the beginnings of air travel?

Get to know the story with one or both of these short videos:
The Greatest Air Race – Trailer
Epic Flight Centenary

Optional: Complete the Reading Comprehension lesson to bolster students overall understanding of the topic.

Details & Diagrams

Students will learn about the Vickers Vimy, its design and structure and apply their knowledge to the task.

Begin by handing out the Details and Diagrams worksheet and instruct students to research the aircraft and record their findings. Once they have a solid understanding, they can move on to completing the diagram and labelling important structural elements, designs and materials.

Students should end the lesson by working in small groups to complete the Yesterday and Today worksheet, comparing flying on the Vimy to flying today. Take time for students to share their work and compare their findings.

NEXT STEPS

There are so many things to learn, so dive deeper and sink your teeth into one or more of these single-lesson or longer format activities available on the Vickers Vimy Learn page.
